Our Approach to Spine Care | McClean Chiropractic Provo

Our Approach to Spine Care

Fellowship-trained. Evidence-based. Built around finding the mechanical source of your pain — not just managing it.

Most care treats the symptom. We look for the cause.

Most patients who walk through our door have already tried something — rest, over-the-counter medications, maybe even a previous round of chiropractic. They got temporary relief or none at all, because the underlying mechanical issue was never identified.

Our approach starts with a proper structural diagnosis. We want to know what is actually happening in your spine — where the restriction is, where the instability is, how your segments are moving, and how that mechanical dysfunction is driving your symptoms. Only then can we build a care plan that addresses the real problem.

All three of our doctors have completed fellowship-level training in spinal biomechanics and trauma (FSBT) — a post-doctoral credential that most chiropractors never pursue. That training shapes how we examine, how we image, and how we treat.

How We Diagnose

A complete picture requires more than a standard workup. Our diagnostic process combines three tools that most clinics do not use together.

Motion X-Ray (DMX)

Standard X-rays show structure at a single moment in time. Motion X-ray captures your spine in motion — frame by frame — revealing ligament instability, restricted segments, and hypermobility that static imaging completely misses. It is performed on-site at our clinic.

Full-Spine X-Ray & Angular Analysis

We take weight-bearing full-spine X-rays and apply precise angular measurements to map your spinal blueprint — the actual structural alignment of your spine. This tells us how far your spine has drifted from normal and where compensation patterns are developing.

MRI Interpretation

Our fellowship training includes post-doctoral education in MRI interpretation — not standard in chiropractic education. We read both the radiologist report and the actual imaging series, and we use AI-assisted tools to support the analysis. If you have existing imaging, we can review it.

Fellowship-Trained in Spinal Biomechanics & Trauma

The FSBT (Fellowship in Spinal Biomechanics and Trauma) designation is a post-doctoral credential awarded after completing advanced training in biomechanical analysis, trauma evaluation, and MRI interpretation. Very few practicing chiropractors hold this fellowship — all three of our doctors do.

This training is not just an academic credential. It changes how we look at a spine. We are trained to identify the kind of subtle structural instability and segmental dysfunction that standard examinations miss — and to connect those findings to the patient’s symptoms in a clinically meaningful way.

How We Treat

Once we understand the mechanical source of your problem, we build an individualized care plan. Treatment at our clinic typically involves some combination of the following, depending on your presentation.

Chiropractic Adjustments

Targeted manipulation to restore proper segmental motion at restricted joints. Applied based on your specific examination findings — not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Spinal Decompression

Computerized axial traction for disc-related symptoms — herniation, sciatica, and radiculopathy. Applied when indicated by examination and imaging findings.

Soft Tissue & Rehabilitation

Muscle work, massage therapy, and rehabilitative exercises that support structural correction and help prevent recurrence.

Spine Management Protocol

A structured care plan built around your spinal blueprint — tracking measurable progress and adjusting the protocol as your spine responds to treatment.

Conservative Care First. Escalation When Warranted.

We believe most spine patients deserve a genuine trial of conservative, non-invasive care before escalating to injections or surgery. The research supports this — and our clinical experience bears it out.

When a patient is not responding to conservative care, we say so. We have direct working relationships with orthopedic spine surgeons, pain management physicians, and MRI facilities in Utah County. When escalation is the right call, we facilitate it — and we can provide a thorough biomechanical workup to help the specialist understand the mechanical picture before any intervention.

If you are considering surgery or have already been recommended for a procedure, we encourage you to get a biomechanical evaluation first. Understanding the structural driver of your problem may change the approach entirely.
